"They didn't want to go back home."
The Washington Post has an amazing story indicating the level of commitment to democracy of the Iraqi citizens. Here's the jist of it:
After a suicide bomber killed five people and wounded seven, the polling place was shut down. Risking becoming a victims of another attack, hundreds of civilians waited for chance that the voting would resume. Eventually it was decided that the perimeter would be move one block from the voting center so voters could be frisked twice. The citizens although insisted that U.S. forces not frisk at the perimeter, the site of the greatest risk to life, suggesting rather that they do it as they could recognize strangers to the district and thwart another attack. The article goes into detail. It is quite amazing, considering some Americans complain about standing in line for an hour.
